Dunedin is one of the older cities in Pinellas County, on the Gulf side just north of Clearwater. The lots near downtown were laid out a long time ago and they are small, and the bungalows and mid century homes on them carry landscaping that has had decades to fill in.
Most properties are on a regular maintenance schedule and the rest of the work is booked when the yard needs it. On a small lot it usually makes sense to add hedge or bed work to a scheduled visit and do the whole yard in one go.

On these streets the open grass is often only a few strips, and nearly all of it runs up against something: the sidewalk, the driveway, a bed line, a fence, the walk to the front door. Every one of those lines has to be worked on its own, so the edging and the trimming on a lot like this take longer than the cut itself does.
These houses were not built with a wide mower deck in mind. Side yards are narrow, back gates are the width they were when the fence went in, and planting often runs right up to the wall of the house. The western edge of the city sits on the water, and those yards take salt in the air and often in the irrigation as well. St. Augustine puts up with salt better than most lawn grasses, which is part of why it is the grass here, and it holds up better still cut high and watered deeply.
Most of the work on an older Dunedin lot is done by hand. Trimming in behind a mature planting, cutting a bed line back to where it belongs and clipping around a fence post are all hand work, and none of them go any faster because the lawn is small.
The plantings are the other half of it. A hedge that has been in the ground for thirty years wants thinning as well as shortening, so that light and air can get back into the middle of the plant. That is slower and more careful work than running a trimmer along the top of it.
